This site contains a collection of primary sources regarding the "discovery" of the Americas by Christopher Columbus. We intend to shed light on the events of the 1490's through journal entries, maps, and other documents.
Using the documents available on this site, students should be able to answer the following questions:
What impact did Columbus have on the Natives?
What motivated his exploration?
Has the history of Columbus, as told by textbooks, an accurate portrayal of what actually occurred?
For each source Identify the type (Primary or Secondary), the point of view, and the main point.
And finally, using the sources, answer the following document based question:
Describe the social, cultural and economic implications of Columbus' journey to the Americas. Overall, was his impact on the New World positive or negative to the previous inhabitants?
