Collaborative learning among college students is useful for increasing student motivation, retention, and outcomes. In the area of educational technology, Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) leverages technology resources to help students collaborate in ways that were not possible in previous generations. Mobile devices add a new dimension to CSCL because of their ubiquitous nature, enabling student access to content and collaboration anytime, anywhere.

| A mobile ad hoc network (MANET), is a self-configuring network of mobile devices connected by wireless links. It is sometimes called a mobile mesh network. Each device in a MANET is free to move independently in any direction, and will therefore change its links to other devices frequently. Each must forward traffic unrelated to its own use, and therefore be a router. Such networks may operate by themselves or may be connected to the larger Internet. |
| A team of graduate students at the University of Texas have developed an application for Android devices that enables students to find other students with similar study interests. Once they find someone with similar interests and within range, they can pass messages and collaborate on study topics.
