Starting in 1803, Texas became a popular place that American pioneers came to settle. Moses Austin, Stephen F. Austin’s father, had an idea to start a colony in Texas, which was ruled by Spain at the time. Moses asked the Spanish governor for permission to start a colony in San Antonio. During this time, Moses fell ill and before he died, he requested his son, Stephen, to continue his mission and settle in Texas.
