"No Child Left Behind" Town Hall Meeting

On Thursday, October 21, 2004, the Delta chapter hosted a "No Child Left Behind" Town Hall Meeting. The meeting fostered public dialogue about the No Child Left Behind Act and its impact on how our nation’s children are educated, as well as the many non-educational factors that affect public schools and children’s ability to succeed. Attendees learned about "No Child Left Behind" and the law’s implications forschools, teachers, parents and children. Discussions included:
• How children are educated
• Children’s ability to succeed
• High-stakes testing
• Highly qualified teachers
• School funding and accountability
• Parental involvement |

Dr. Nel Noddings, noted author and educator, was the keynote speaker at this important educational forum. Other members of the panel included: Dr. O.L.Davis, Jr, Catherine Mae Parker Centennial Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at The University of Texas at Austin; Norma Silva Quinn, Principal at Elementary; and Ben Kramer, Principal (on leave) at Mathews Elementary.

The event was part of a national series of town hall meetings sponsored by Kappa Delta Pi headquarters, the National Academy of Education, and the National Society for the Study of Education. Attendees included parents, teachers, business leaders, funding and youth service agencies, pre-service teacher candidates, teacher education faculty, and the media. |
