A little story about myself…
My name is Mayra Ibarra and I am the youngest of two daughters. My older sister is a senior at Texas Christian University and is graduating with a degree in bilingual education as well. Since I was raised in Dallas, Texas, it should be of no shock that I am a huge Dallas Cowboys fan. I put up posters and newspaper articles all over my room and am always proud to wear their jerseys, despite their recent losing season. In my free time, I like to play volleyball and soccer with my friends just for fun. I also really enjoy cooking for my friends and having small get-togethers at my apartment. My favorite subject in school has always been math and I hope for my future students to love math as much as I do.
Why I want to be a teacher...
Teachers are one of the most influential individuals in children’s life. I want to be a teacher because I want to impact students’ lives and guide them in the direction that leads to their purpose of living. I especially want to be a bilingual teacher because I was a young student in a bilingual program, so I can definitely relate with the students. I would also like to improve bilingual programs and use what I went through in bilingual classrooms to help students learn English. At the same time, I want to be a role model to students who have immigrated from other countries by setting an example of going to college and becoming a professional. Both my parents’ jobs are manual labor and I was brought to this country with my parents. Therefore, I want to encourage students whose parents may be of working class and immigrants to pursue a higher education and fulfill their dreams.
